After drawing an image OBSERVED, and covering it with an opaque
mask, my memory of it immediately starts to dim. Obviously,
the degree to which my drawing of the image REMEMBERED will
resemble the image OBSERVED will depend on how long ago I
drew the latter, (and on my skills as a draughtsman, of course).
But other factors also contribute to distortions in the REMEMBERED
image.
For instance, if, in the interim between drawings, another,
it may be quite unrelated, image makes an impression, (as
this image of a baby did between drawing the Louris
OBSERVED and the Louris
REMEMBERED), the fresher memory of the new image may fuse
with the original memory image to produce a hybrid.
